Look Up, Look Around #1

St. Martin in the FieldsLooking up and looking around, as I was walking from Leicester Square to the Strand, I spotted the beautiful window at the back of the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.  It is spectacularly modern yet is reminiscent of beautiful stained glass.  The east window was installed as part of St. Martin’s refurbishment programme in 2008 and is the work of Iranian-born artist Shirazeh Houshiary.  It caught my attention in particular because of the contrast between the curved oval in the middle of the window and the diligently straight lines.  The window appears to make room for the oval as the lines distort and attempt to curve around it – some are unsuccessful and stop at the oval, holding it in place.

It is a brilliant example of interesting works of design and architecture that can be seen if you just look up or look around you.
